I'm an American Scot (more so Scot than anything else, though not half) and unfortunately the only second language I can speak is Spanish. I read recently that according a 1996 estimate by the General Register Office for Scotland, 30% of the Scottish population actually speaks Scots. Do you consider this accurate? If not, what percentage of Scots do you estimate does speak Scots?

Sorry for the English but this Scot in Michigan is several generations removed from Peebleshire. Please define the word "jock" in this greeting from a third cousin (once removed) on a Christmas card from Scotland with holly, fir cones, ivy, and mistletoe on the front-- " A little bit of jock flavour." Thanks. Lang may yir lum reek--2005. [If you're curious I'll tell you what the word means in North America.] Wabmaister: Jock is the Scots form of the name Jack. Used as a generic term for a Scotsman thus also meaning Scottish.
