I am of Ulster origin, but living in Friesland in the Netherlands. It is fascinating to see the relationship betweenScots and Frisian, so many common words and structures. Frisian was once almost a dead language, only spoken by peasants and of very low social status. This has changed and there is no reason why Scots should not be the legal and official language in Scotland. One thing is important though, there must be a standard, which does not mean that dialects should be discriminated against and secondly it must be a relevant language. If Scots remains a nicetey of Scottish folkore then it will not work. As I said, it must be relevant at work and at home, in public and in private. Then it will survive and be a living language again. I wish this will happen.
